Ashwagandha for Women: Benefits, Dosing, and What to Look For

Ashwagandha is one of the most researched adaptogens in the world. But not all ashwagandha is created equal — and the form and dose matter enormously.

Ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years, but it's only in the last decade that Western research has caught up with what traditional practitioners have known all along. It is now one of the most studied adaptogens in the world — and for women navigating stress, hormonal imbalance, and fatigue, the evidence is genuinely compelling.

An adaptogen is a plant compound that helps your body adapt to stress by modulating the HPA axis — the communication pathway between your brain and adrenal glands that governs cortisol production. Ashwagandha doesn't simply sedate or stimulate; it helps normalise your stress response, bringing cortisol down when it's chronically elevated and supporting energy when the adrenals are depleted.

What the research shows for women:

A 2019 randomised controlled trial published in Medicine found that 240mg of ashwagandha extract daily for 60 days reduced serum cortisol by 22.2% and significantly improved sleep quality, anxiety, and general wellbeing. A separate study specifically in women found improvements in sexual function, arousal, lubrication, and satisfaction. Research in women with thyroid dysfunction shows ashwagandha supports T3 and T4 production — it's one of the few adaptogens with direct thyroid-supporting evidence.

Why the form matters enormously:

Most ashwagandha supplements on the market are simply dried root powder — cheap to produce, but with inconsistent withanolide content (the active compounds). KSM-66 is a patented, full-spectrum root extract standardised to at least 5% withanolides. It has the most clinical research behind it of any ashwagandha extract. Sensoril is another high-quality extract, standardised to both withanolides and withanosides, and tends to be more calming. Avoid supplements that don't specify their extract type or withanolide percentage.

Dosing and timing:

The therapeutic dose used in most clinical trials is 300–600mg of a standardised extract daily. For stress and cortisol reduction, morning dosing works well. For sleep support, taking it 60–90 minutes before bed is more effective. It takes 4–8 weeks of consistent use to experience the full benefit — ashwagandha works by gradually rebalancing the HPA axis, not by providing immediate relief.

A note of caution: ashwagandha is a nightshade-family plant and is contraindicated in pregnancy. If you have autoimmune conditions, consult your healthcare provider before starting, as adaptogens can modulate immune activity.
