Your liver is responsible for metabolising and clearing used hormones from your bloodstream. Every day, it processes oestrogen, cortisol, testosterone, and other hormones, converting them into water-soluble forms that can be excreted through bile and stool. When the liver is sluggish — from alcohol, processed foods, environmental toxins, or simply being overwhelmed — hormone clearance slows down, and oestrogen in particular begins to accumulate.
The two phases of liver detoxification:
Phase 1 converts fat-soluble toxins and hormones into intermediate compounds. Phase 2 conjugates these intermediates with molecules to make them water-soluble for excretion. Both phases require specific nutrients: Phase 1 needs B vitamins, vitamin C, and antioxidants.
