The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your throat, and it controls almost everything: your metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, mood, hair growth, and energy levels. When it's underperforming — a condition called hypothyroidism — every system in your body slows down.
The frustrating reality is that thyroid dysfunction is one of the most underdiagnosed conditions in women. Standard thyroid panels often only test TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), which can appear normal even when the thyroid is struggling. Many women with clear hypothyroid symptoms are told their labs are fine and sent home.
What a comprehensive thyroid panel should include:
TSH alone is not enough. You also want Free T3 and Free T4 (the active and storage forms of thyroid hormone), Reverse T3 (which can block T3 receptors even when T3 looks normal), and thyroid antibodies (TPO and TgAb) to rule out Hashimoto's — an autoimmune thyroid condition that affects up to 10% of women.
The most common thyroid symptoms women dismiss:
Persistent fatigue that doesn't improve with sleep, unexplained weight gain especially around the midsection, hair thinning or loss (particularly from the outer third of the eyebrows), cold hands and feet, constipation, brain fog, depression, dry skin, and a slow heart rate. The nutrients your thyroid needs most:
Iodine is the raw material for thyroid hormone — without it, your thyroid literally cannot make T4. Selenium is essential for converting T4 into the active T3 form; Brazil nuts are the richest food source (one or two per day is sufficient). Zinc supports TSH production. Iron deficiency impairs thyroid function — another reason to check ferritin. And ashwagandha has been shown in studies to support healthy TSH levels by reducing the cortisol that interferes with thyroid signalling.
What disrupts thyroid function:
Chronic stress is the number one thyroid disruptor — cortisol directly suppresses TSH and T3. Gluten is a significant trigger for Hashimoto's due to molecular mimicry.
